The Single Step to Transform your
BARKING & LUNGING devil in to COOL & CALM companion!
In this blog posts we share the gamechanging concept of optimism for working with your reactive dog and a 3-minute game that gets you there!
If your dog finds other dogs, people, noises or even objects nerve-wracking…

…or maybe they fine novelty or the unusual unsettling…
… or maybe even being left alone something to fear,
…then you might describe your dog as a pessimist!

Picture the scene…..you’re thinking about taking for your dog for a walk and the plan going through your head resembles that of a military operation….

You plan a special route…..avoiding all the local joggers

Select a suitable time to go….when no one else is likely to be around

Go in the car….avoid meeting the neighbourhood dogs

Worry if there’s a reaction like last time…..you’re not sure you can cope with that again...

Your stomach turns and the anxiety begins to increase at the very thought of what might happen.

It’s real, it happens…..

This is NOT what you imagined dog ownership would be!
Don’t despair! We get it - we’ve been there!

Your dog CAN be happier, your walks less stressful and your relationship better…. you just need to understand how?

It’s something called OPTIMISM, and it fixes everything….

In the context of dogs and dog training, the definition of optimism is that when a dog is presented with something new or slightly strange, he presumes it to be something good rather than something to be worried about!
This learning is huge.

Most barking, lunging and generally reacting is because of underlying pessimism:
“New thing in the situation (Insert Dog/Person/Noise) is SCARY”

Optimism makes the difference between an effortless canine companion to share the world with, and one that is the complete opposite. Optimism is a fundamental concept that dogs today must have in order to be successful. An optimistic dog is not reactive; he is confident and he is a keen learner.

“Optimism is a fundamental concept that dogs today must have in order to be successful”……Dr.Tom Mitchell

What might seem like nothing to us might seem like something significant to our dog……a new box in a room that is normally clear of any boxes, a person appearing wearing a hat, an umbrella opening…..we aim to make novelty normal by pairing novelty with a positive feeling, boosting optimism.

When you have a dog that barks, lunges or reacts (we call them “Naughty but Nice” dogs), people will tell you…

…you need to find every dog in the dog park and introduce your dog
…you need to hunt down some positive experiences with that SCARY thing
…you need to expose, expose, EXPOSE to the worrying world
…you need to “socialise” them (but if you were honest our dogs actually can’t even dream of being “social” with that scary thing right now)

But, instead, you can actually take a step away from that world and build OPTIMISM (and all through GAMES!)

How to Build Optimism

To build optimism as a concept there are some fantastic games you can play to make novelty normal. We want our dogs to be able to approach challenges in their every day life with the best reaction - not barking and lunging and screaming and worrying - actually, absolutely no reaction.
We can build that through games….

“The Best Reaction is No Reaction”

One of our favourite games is Noise box and one to start you on the optimism-building road right away….

1. Fill a box with safe items that the dog can safely explore, bubble wrap, foil, plastic bottles,
2. Scatter feed in to the box and let them explore in their own time,
3. As they do, reinforce that amazing choice by scatter feeding some more in to the box.
4. Allow them to explore, no pressure, no stress….scatter feeding part of your dogs daily food allowance.

This is pairing novelty with a positive outcome to the MAX, and actively builds optimism and shapes your dog’s brain and future choices to better tackle the weird and wonderful worlds they find themselves in!

Now this is just one of the games we play in our living rooms with our dogs that actually change and shape their brains to optimists, transforming their struggles in the rest of the world. Now that’s powerful!

We put some of our top optimism-boosting games into a book (it’s called Optimism Rocks) and to celebrate its release and the thousands of transformations these games have achieved for dogs across the world, it’s actually FREE right now and you can get it by hitting the link here:

Games are POWERFUL and played in as little as 3 minutes but can have a huge impact on our dogs ability to cope with what was once a stressful situation.
